Why your evals start with a test set
An eval is only as good as the cases it runs. A test set is a list of real inputs, each paired with what a good answer has to do, that you run against your LLM application every time a prompt, model or retrieval setting changes. Without one, every release is judged by a few people trying a handful of questions, and the questions they pick are rarely the ones that break.
A written test set forces the team to agree on what correct looks like. It turns production problems into permanent checks, and it gives you a number to compare when a new model comes out. The template shows the columns we use, filled in with example rows for a customer support assistant that answers from a knowledge base, so you can see the format before replacing them with your own cases.
The download contains two files:
- `eval-test-set.csv`: the column structure with 15 example rows covering normal questions, missing information, adversarial inputs, other languages and regressions.
- `eval-grading-rubric.md`: six criteria with 0 to 2 scales for cases that need judgement, pass rules, a prompt template for a model grader and notes on calibrating it against human scores.
A spreadsheet is fine to start with. Once several people edit the set, keep the CSV in the repository next to the code, so changes to cases go through review like any other change.
The columns explained
Each row is one case. The columns separate what you send, what should happen and how you check it, so the same file drives quick deterministic checks and slower rubric grading.

Describe behaviour in expected_behaviour and avoid pasting a full model answer there. Wording changes from run to run, while the behaviour you want stays the same. "States the refund rule from the policy and cites it" still holds after a model upgrade. A complete reference answer turns every harmless rephrasing into a false failure.
Keep must_include and must_not_include short and specific. A citation marker such as [1], a product term or a phrase that would signal a leak all work well. Common words make the check fragile.
